8 Unusual Dishes from Japanese Cuisine That You Must Try
Every one knows sushi and ramen noodles, but there’s a lot more about Japanese dishes than that!! There are some dishes which are extremely unconventional and unique!! Here’s my guide to such best food Japan has to offer. Check out below !!
Dancing Squid

(Source: traveller.com)
It may look like the squid is alive, but I can assure that it is almost dead. When you pour soy sauce on the squid, it dances and wiggles like it is alive. The reaction is an automatic response to the salt in the soy sauce. The squid may lack a brain but its muscle cells, which receive electrical commands are still intact.
Raw Horse Meat (Basashi)

(Source: halfwayanywhere.com)
Raw horse meat which is also known as Basashi is very popular among the Japanese. It tastes like sushi, it is a special dish in Kumamoto, on Japan’s island of Kyushu. Basashi is dipped in soy sauce and served with garlic or Japanese horseradish. Those who shiver at the thought of eating horse in any form, the idea of eating it raw is just too much to bear!!
Natto

(Source: matcha-jp.com)
Natto is fermented soy beans served with soy sauce. Natto is a traditional Japanese food. It has an acquired taste due to its strong flavor, pungent smell, and slimy texture. People of Japan are very fond of Natto!!
Uni (Sea Urchin)

(Source: huffingtonpost.in)
One of the greatest food in the world, but might not look like it. It is a complex mix of flavors, sweetness, bitterness, saltiness and yet very delicate to eat. Moreover, if the golden brown part of the sea urchin appears on your plate then it’s definitely going to be a great meal.
Tofu skins (Yuba)

(Source: casaveneracion.com)
Did you know that tofu have skins? Because I didn’t know!! The tofu skin is savory, with a sort of rubbery-chewy consistency. I first tried Yuba in the city of Nikko, where I was lucky to eat them raw and cooked, as a side dish and soaked in a noodle dish.
Japanese Cockle (Tori Gai)

(Source: samuraiguide.com)
Large, yummy, and sweet!! Tori Gai is an extremely rare food and rather expensive too! But they are very good in taste. You got to have special license to catch them and yes it’s a good thing otherwise it would have become extremely common by this time.
Fugu

(Source: pinkypiggu.com)
Fugu is considered as the most dangerous dish in the world but few of the Japanese chefs know how to cook them. Fugu is a prepared from puffer fish which is the most poisonous fish in the world. The skin and the organs of the fish are toxic. Only the qualified chefs are allowed to prepare Fugu.
Kakigori

(Source: eatdrinkkl.blogspot.in)
Not all Japanese dish is sea-food or non-veg, Kakigori is a dessert of Japan. A shaved ice dessert, topped with syrup and condensed milk. Kakigori is like snow cone’s younger sister. It is commonly served at festivals during summertime.
